  I was mesmerised by this celtic war trumpet, but even more mesmerised when I saw a video of someone playing it. Until I heard it, I'd have assumed it made a monotone bellow. But the carnyx played varied, lighter notes. It sounded musical. Which somehow made the thought even more terrifying, of being gathered around the fire, telling stories one Iron Age night, and suddenly you hear this beautiful sinister music in the dark air, telling you a horde of Celtic warriors are about to attack.

  I don’t often shop in this shopping centre. I had to find a specific shop so went to look it up on the giant You Are Here poster map with a store index. They’ve replaced it with a giant touch-screen you have to operate, clicking in & out of pages while the nearest 107 people follow along. Probably shows ads too. (I didn’t use it.) A waste of time. A waste of the customer’s and planet’s energy. The poster map was at-a-glance simple. It worked for decades. Such a stupid case of #enshittificat...

  Mid-afternoon, mid-city, the middle of the Summer holidays. This is usually one of the most bustling streets in the city centre. Always lots of people walking around, parking bikes, waiting to meet someone, cycling by, window-shopping, standing while doing something on their phone, hanging out, going in and out of the busy supermarket. Unsettling to see it almost deserted, the few people around all walking in the thin line of shadow on one side of the street. #ClimateDiary #Aarhus

  This is the Dar Szczecina, sailing out of Aarhus in the Tall Ships parade, being waved off by thousands. Just as it reached open sea, the Mission Impossible music started playing on board. As the crowds laughed and cheered, the young crew lined up on deck and did a joyous choreographed dance, mimicking rope-hauling, making moves to the Mission Impossible beat. This flat unmoving picture shares none of that. I wish I could convey it, because for that joyful moment, all was right with the world.

  Two tiny things I've started doing since the heatwaves became social small talk. I use the phrase 'climate collapse'. Klimakollaps. Not climate change.   I never saw a single toot about Taylor Swift getting married. I didn't know she got married until I saw a photo on the national news broadcaster's website. I was away from Mastodon for a few hours today. Within minutes of logging back on, I knew Bonnie Tyler had died and was nodding in agreement at all the toots paying respects to that excellent singer. I feel this illustrates something about the Fediverse.

  About 20 years ago, I saw an excellent rock. It was unusual, so I took a photo. But I couldn’t find the photo shortly afterwards and thought I’d deleted it by mistake. I was sad. I kept describing the rock to people, but they were strangely uninterested. I am clearing out my photo archive and I just found it. I am happy. I missed this rock. I thought of it often. I can show my rock to people now, whether they want to see it or not. You included.

"A bike helmet that is also a sun hat with a face-shadowing brim. From a decent EU company. Even better if it's Danish.   Bike bloat. Unlike car bloat, it's a good thing. Bigger bikes with wide handlebars and child seats and shopping baskets and cargo trailers and people carriers. Safe, functional everyday transport. Better, quicker, nicer, quieter, healthier and more likely to make you smile and say ‘whee!’ going downhill than a car. One downside: bike rack design is lagging behind. Bike park engineers still design racks with narrow spaces as if we’re all just sporting around for fun on slim racer bikes. #...
