Two tiny things I've started doing since the heatwaves became social small talk. I use the phrase 'climate collapse'. Klimakollaps. Not climate change. When anyone moans about the heat in isolation, as if it's just a rare hot day today, I mention the death toll and wonder aloud: 'What are we going to do about climate collapse?' Just to bring it into the conversation. I know it's very Old Woman Yells At Climate Collapse. But it's just weird that we refuse to even mention it. #ClimateDiary

@CiaraNi@mastodon.green I have become the mood killer at lunch who takes any discussion of the heat and reminds people this is actually probably the coldest summer for the rest of our lives.

@CiaraNi@mastodon.green I use environmental or ecological breakdown/collapse. I stopped to use "climate" because 1) climate is one of the planetary systems 2) it's one of the most complex systems, and impossible to govern 3) the major driver is the destruction of the land/water environment due to anthropogenic activity, from extractive industry to constant urbanisation. Point 3 is the part of the discourse directly dependent on our action: we can't control the rain, but we can avoid wiping out another forest.
