Thinking you are doing something by refusing to use #AI is like convincing yourself you're saving the planet because you buy your produce at the farmer's market.

So, I think it's really funny that you can tell if your research is really novel by feeding it to an AI and then having the AI state it's wrong because it doesn't look like anything it's read before.

So... #OpenAI is claiming their "containment breach" (which I continue to think is #bullshit) means they aren't training new #AI. It's awfully convenient that it's training new #LLM models that is the expensive part of their company.

So, within the last month four different groups have come forward with positions on AI. You have Anthropic and OpenAI that want to stop open models. You have bigtech who has lost the AI battle to have open models. You have Meta who wants it to be radically unregulated. You have former researchers who want frontier models to be slowed down. There is definitely going to be shifts in the marketplace soon.

HOW TO ARGUE WITH ME I do not participate in coalition inference: identifying which "side" a sentence resembles, assigning me that side's beliefs, and then responding to those beliefs instead of my words. I consider that practice intellectually corrosive and ethically wrong. I will try to apply these same standard to you. If you think I have replaced your claim with a more familiar or politically convenient version, quote the substitution and correct me. I will concede when I am...

Okay. I have to leave the app again for the day. I should be applying to jobs right now, and I'm starting to pick fights again. Which I'm not supposed to be doing. I'm really trying #Hecate.

@juergen_hubert@mementomori.social This is a really new definition. A theory is a comprehensive explanation of a set of fact. I don't know when this definition showed up, but it was not the definition used by Popper of Khun. It is true that "It's just a theory" was never a correct sentence. To constitute a theory it has to explain the data.

Since I'm not supposed to be arguing with people I am going to need to start thinking about what I want to do with HTs I see. Just saw a thing saying that using AI is giving private corporations personal data. I wanted to point out that this isn't true with privacy first providers like tinfoil.sh, or with local AI. But that would be engaging, so I should... write it down as a thing to blog about later?

In which I stop arguing with people about #AI. Spiritually, right now, I'm supposed to be learning to stop being constantly embattled with the universe. Why? I don't know, #Hecate seems to think it's important for me. But, maybe, it's because it's because it's exhausting and fruitless. I've spent my life with my fists up standing up to bullies and have the scar tissue to show for it. So, the best way I can address people with stupid AI takes is to just not 1/

I have, twice now, been rejected from "AI Engineering" roles because the person interviewing me knew radically less about the technology than I do and was incapable of understanding my answer or even asking a question appropriate to the domain. #AI #AIEngineering

@Shdwdrgn@tech.lgbt Yeah, but the stats for money making on OF isn't great.

I wonder if I'm too old to make money on OF. I might just not be ambitious enough. Starvation maybe is the alternative though.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@Dhmspector/116988301715121675 The Singularity is defined, literally, as hyperbolic growth. In case you're wondering, that is literally impossible. Also, it would mean the end of all political and social systems. Yes, Kurzweil in also a tech bro idiot, so I find this take entirely unsurprising.

#English: fuck = sex. But... "I wanna sex you up", and "I wanna fuck you up" are almost opposites.

So, #AI #DataCenters don't really use very much water. The water reports are not actually pulled from the system, and long term they won't really affect water supplies unless the area is already stretched. What I am, really, concerned about is the destruction of micro-ecologies to build these systems, the destruction of aquifying biomes with hard surfaces, and generally the way the massive land use is going to create huge long term problems by disrupting natural aquifers.

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@tinker/116928387853350891 I know y'all don't care about my weird realities with Ethics, but... Yeah, I'm with Linus. Those that follow me can't be surprised, but it's maybe not for the reason you think. So, I am radically against any form of moralizing over any form of purity. Any statement of the normative value of provenance encourages a moral framework that pits sociocultural values against each other. The only time these are relevant is w...

Every once in a while I'm suddenly like, "Oh, shit. I made this fucking irreversible life decision to change sex, something I dreamed of since I was young, and now it's here." Like, it's frightening and also relieving all at the same time. So much grief for time lost, so much fear about my future, but also more joy than I was ever able to generate before.

From 2018 to 2022 a company. Apollo Fusion was planning to sell and deploy Mercury based propellants for satellites what it new would cause 20 tons of mercury _per year_ to be released into earths atmosphere, which would 100% destroy the entire world if sustained for long enough.

It looks like for every 100 posts I make I get on average a bit more ethan 1 follower. Of course, the posts where I spend hours figuring out and writing generate the most followers. The pithy offhand comments generate the least. Between these is the posts devoid of fact and strong on stance - which are low effort and generate a lot of followers. If my goal is to attract followers, I would increasingly minimize research and analysis, and just take strong uninformed states on things.

Hmmm... I kind of realized today, that I'm kind of a bitch. I definitely lack the social softness that many of my peers have. I've also, very clearly, been dealing with a similar thesis for a while: human behaviors exist within a set of constraints and affordances, and moralizing without recognition of the systems that a person exists within is oppressive.

I can't even with the fucking #American POV and their shitty uninformed opinions about #AC in #Europe. The #heat #death count in Europe isn't anywhere close to as much higher as is widely claimed, because it's comparing Heat Stroke death to Excess Deaths during heatwaves over baseline. Second, AC is massively more expensive to install in Europe on average. My exterior walls are half a meter thick, and my widow is the size of a Manhattan studio apartment. That means the _only_ wa...

Behavior in socio-technical systems, such as the #Fediverse, are created structurally by the architecture of that system. The moralizing of individual behavior that emerges from structural problems is very much the same as "carbon footprint", even if the larger sociotechnical framework is different. All sociotechnical systems exist with cybernetic feedback from the users, and the less adaptable the technology is, the more adaptable the users will become. Both shitty bots and dogpil...
