  I have a franchise idea... a shop that sells only bulk items by weight into your own reusable containers. Shampoo, slices of soap off of a bar, basically anything shelf-stable that usually comes in single-use plastic.

  I decided to leave the window open tonight, for that cool gentle breeze. 1:30am (an hour ago) I finally got up and closed the window, the storm was scraping the blinds against the wall. Still sounds very windy out there. Anyway, what are you doing?

  I would like to practice longer walks, around ten miles, in preparation for a possible walking holiday next year. Does anyone familiar with the Fife region know of any good walks that don't involve walking along roads without a footpath? I don't drive, so accessibility by train or bus is essential.   I gave up on the Jodie Whittaker Doctor episodes at the exact same point as when they first aired. And I promise I really tried this time. I always thought it was the awful Chibnalled stories, but I have to be honest. I can't stand the fake cheerful whining. Or the striding around holding the sonic screwdriver out like a tour guide rallying a group of tourists with a little flag.

  Bus drivers get mad if you get on before passengers get off, despite there being no way for you to see them slowly getting to their feet at the back of the bus. There again, they'd get mad if you waited for passengers to get off, and none were going to do so, so it evens out. Bus drivers do a wonderful job in terrible conditions, I won't hear a word said against them. But sometimes...

  Do you ever put off going back to sleep because you had that dream again where you were just about to crawl through that space that is obviously too small, and there's NFW you want to go back into the same dream? And why the flying photon was I wearing a tuxedo? I've never worn a tuxedo.

  I strongly suspect that the current generation of engineers - of all types - have so many workplace distractions and interruptions that they rarely if ever find themselves "in the zone". That transcendental space where the entirety of the design is clear in your mind, the next three steps forward are queued up waiting to be typed in, another crystalizing as soon as the first is instantiated, and before you know it hours have passed and you have made (regular) days of progress....

  @cstross@wandering.shop hmm, that seems to be fading fast. I know so many people who never read a book, or who have a very limited vocabulary. I think mass literacy peaked perhaps twenty or thirty years ago.

  @jacqui76@mastodon.ie Mahmood says that making life harder for asylum seekers will "reduce racism". Absolute tosh, racists will be emboldened by the institutionalised dehumanisation of minorities. I'm recently returned to the UK after more than two decades away. I know the psychological toll of being "other" - and I'm not in a targeted demographic. There is no need to turn up the heat further, this is just performative cruelty. I don't feel represented by West...
