@burgerdrome@aus.social In the 80s I believe the vi editor at least kept a swap file that could usually preserve your recent edits if you didn't save before it powered down, but it's possible that came later.

@burgerdrome@aus.social computer in the 2020’s. You blinked. Let me completely refresh this browser window with a whole new set of ads and suggestions - you clearly were not about to click on that post anyway. Oh you did click on the story - here have some pop ups and a video and a gif and let’s refresh the page with new ads while you are scrolling. You are on your phone? Let’s refresh with a blank page so you can’t actually read the end of the article. Clearly you want to click on this ad (not shown)

@burgerdrome@aus.social No forced AI if you switch to Linux... I'd start with Ubuntu and with experience move to Debian, the distro Ubuntu is based on. Debian is the most stable experience. You can match packages from less stable / fresher sources. Good to do an install / first try on a virtual machine, like free virtualbox. I personally gravitate toward command line tools because they don't change their interface so it's setting things up how I like only once. Same reason to separate "/" and "/home".

@burgerdrome@aus.social [raises hand sheepishly] “I’d like to amend the 2020s description a little…” Computer in the 2020s: Your WiFi is down…so you can just ‘eff off until it comes back online m’kay? Because if I can’t get online you don’t have a computer. Local drive? Listen neckbeard you downloaded the security updates and they undid those tweaks you looked up and popped your files and emails right back into the cloud. Because corporate needs to know what cat food you buy…”

@burgerdrome@aus.social Computer ad in the 2030s: Introducing Microsoft’s new Aurb! Powered with AI, it provides you with the most relevant responses to your questions, we’ve done away with that pesky keyboard and mouse schtick; Aurb responds entirely to swiping actions. Better pull some-a those rods out of the nukeano, because the energy demand is insane! Get ready for the purchase that is fully integrated with the Microsoft ecosystem or whatever the fuck we’re calling it now. Pictured: Aurb

@burgerdrome@aus.social Computers in 2024 are more like: Sure, here's a summary of what you did recently: You got up at 8:32 am, went to the bathroom looking at porn for 7 minutes, then you left for 25 griffith street to buy a car magazine and two cans of red bull at the gas station using your second credit card. While waiting you looked at the follwing instagram pages (...) until you were interrupted by your friend XY who uses an iphone 10 and whom you meet there every other week on mondays. Then, ...

@burgerdrome@aus.social Modern computers are truly amazing! They store your data in 500 different locations and even send a copy to the FBI just in case. Sometimes it feels like they know more about us than we do ourselves, and all this comes with a ton of ads!
