@burgerdrome@aus.social No forced AI if you switch to Linux... I'd start with Ubuntu and with experience move to Debian, the distro Ubuntu is based on. Debian is the most stable experience. You can match packages from less stable / fresher sources. Good to do an install / first try on a virtual machine, like free virtualbox. I personally gravitate toward command line tools because they don't change their interface so it's setting things up how I like only once. Same reason to separate "/" and "/home".

@cohentheblue@ohai.social I really appreciate you leaning into the stereotype of "the guy on Mastodon who suggests installing Linux to strangers"

It is a computer. You paid dearly for it. Is it YOUR computer? If it is running closed-source software: No. This computer will work for some other parties, against your interests. If it is running open source software: Maybe. But not necessarily. It your computer is running open source software (including the OS) that you could potentially replace, with versions modified as you please: Then I concede it is really YOUR computer. @cohentheblue@ohai.social @burgerdrome@aus.social

@cohentheblue@ohai.social @burgerdrome@aus.social you do realize that anyone who never gave a try to Linux won't understand anything about what you're saying after the first "with" of your toot, right?
