@Devijand@mastodon.social Ugh, I'm with you. The previous owners put this everywhere and then covered it with soil. Impossible to remove. In some cases I had to dig down and poke holes in the barrier so the trees they planted on top had more root space and would stop wilting on hot days

@Devijand@mastodon.social oh yeah, we'll be picking that junk out of out allotment plot for years... when we took on our second plot we pulled up to 4 layers out of places, often with dirt between... strata of the junk... sometimes interleaved with the felty stuff which just tears into random chunks too. Problem is the council guy who manages the site actually encourages people to use the stuff. We use only cardboard and woodchip ourselves, and it seems to work better than the plastic does for other folks.

@Devijand@mastodon.social Oh goddess yeah, we ended up hiring a rotovator thing to completely mash it all up and take out the entire top layer. Such a pain in the ass and it doesn't even work that well, found out it was there when we were trying to dig weeds out of the lawn.

@Devijand@mastodon.social Yes, don't put any plastic in the soil. It will be there for a long time; it traps and strangles small creatures (I found a hedgehog trapped in this way, in plastic litter I should have tidied up; it died). If you're growing food in that ground, #microplastics are going to get into that food and consequently into anyone who eats it. Plastic and gardening should not mix at all.
