Texas A&M, an institution that purports to be a university, has told a philosophy professor he is forbidden from teaching Plato. https://dailynous.com/2026/01/06/texas-am-bans-plato/ #censorship #AcademicFreedom #Texas

@ASegar@mastodon.social WTF! This is scary in the extreme. Enough of this sh*t… Prof’s reply… “Please note that my course does not “advocate” any ideology; I teach students how to structure & evaluate arguments commonly raised in discussions of contemporary moral issues.” (See “The Charade of Banning ‘Advocacy’“.) He also reminded his chair & #college officials that “the U.S. #constitution protects my course content,” as do the norms of… #academicfreedom ”

@ASegar@mastodon.social I would be very cautious in the hiring graduates from TX, OK, FL, or other states that treat education as nothing more than a vocational necessity.

@ASegar@mastodon.social I do not understand the reasoning!?! What BS are they claiming? Plato is foundational. You may as well scrap philosophy altogether.

@ASegar@mastodon.social I'm happy to see four year college and university faculty bullied and harassed and micromanaged by administrators like we in community college faculty have been for decades. I was harassed to the point of retiring, banned from teaching my discipline for two years and my courses given to adjuncts, and not a single soul believed me or my colleagues and no one, including accreditors and AAUP, stepped up to help us. Sometimes universities were the bully. Welcome to the world!

@ASegar@mastodon.social I would ask them for the specific readings from Plato that violate the rule. If they're going to block teaching based on a rule, they should damn well be able to point out what specific parts of the material they are blocking.

@ASegar@mastodon.social Ah, yet another reason why companies are starting to look askance at job applicants bearing "degrees" from various red states.

@ASegar@mastodon.social Sad to see that many American universities, like Texas A&M, seem to care more about running a semi-professional football team than academic freedom and integrity.
