@zaire not all of us have dealt with savory souls as parents but i'm not sure lashing out at the void for what is seemingly a well intentioned feature is the right answer here >fuck it, apologists - come at me and get blocked: #GNOME nor is introducing a toxic waste sinkhole the right answer either..

@zaire@fedi.absturztau.be yeah,,,, i've always just laughed at the "parental controls" thing in gnome if your kid is smart enough to be using linux instead of an ipad or windows or whatever, they're probably smart enough to either find a bypass or just reinstall the computer?"okay pookie here's your fresh gnu/linux desktop, mommy set your bedtime to 9pm and blocked super tux kart after 6"this won't happen for 99% of young people using gnome, since they set up their OS themselves, have root, and can set their age to any number they want the sheer uselessness of this anti-feature for most of users doesn't excuse the shitty ageist intentions behind it. and sadly, just from how many users gnome has, some creature out there is probably going to be oppressed with this gnome devs should know better :neocat_floof_sad:

You don't need to know the age of the user for any of this to work. Or is parents trying to prevent their kids from having addictions on electronics and seeing content they probably shouldn't see a bad thing? Mind you, web filtering can already be easily implemented with DNS filtering.

@zaire@fedi.absturztau.be Hi, I am introducing a feature to make GNOME more accessible to people who need dark mode. The state will assign you a person who gets to decide if you are allowed to use dark mode or not. If they say no then you have to use light mode. This makes GNOME more accessible.

@zaire@fedi.absturztau.be it's funny in a "dark comedy" way that when a shitty legislature passes with a thin-veiled excuse, the correct thing to do is to just do the bare-minimum needed to comply or do malicious compliance if you're feeling bold (see: Ageless Linux but you've probably heard of it already), but there'll always be shitlibs like this who do not just comply but also add 50 other things in the legislature's shitty direction

@zaire I wish my parents "abused" me in a way that would prevent me from accessing toxic wikis‚ troll imageboards and gory content when I was a kid so that it wouldn't affect my mental health. Unfortunately they weren't aware of the danger internet poses to vulnerable. But I now know‚ from my own experience. Parental controls is a way for parents to prevent kids to stumble across green site and manosphere scums. If you don't manage it for them‚ the algorithm will. And it's not in the best interest of algorithm to show what's best for who's using it. And even if there wasn't integrated parental controls feature‚ people would still be interested in it. They would just get them from paid proprietary apps‚ just like antiviruses in Windows. Which would be much much much worse.

@zaire I'm really confused by what you're saying here and would appreciate some elaboration. Do account controls aimed at helping parents to keep their kids safe enable abuse or censorship? It's a setting that you can choose to configure, or not configure, right? Nobody is forcing those settings upon consenting adults, and they sound useful for helping to protect young children from the less-positive sides of the internet. Parents have a responsibility to keep their children safe, and being able to block content that is not child-friendly, and encourage a positive relationship with technology is a critical part of that. I'm absolutely opposed to censorship, but user-configurable settings that help parents to keep their kids safe doesn't seem like that at all. I'd really appreciate an explanation if I am missing something here.
