@Julie@social.coop I tried a little bit to find out if our instance (social.coop) is complicit in some of the block/report stuff that contributes to inaccessibility for Black people, but, for instance, all the instances they have blocked give no description of why--so is it b/c White Supremacists or is it b/c they aren't restrictive enough on uncomfortable discussions of racism? This is a comfortable corner & I have no complaints, but sometimes discomfort is necessary.

@Julie@social.coop I think some of the "Make a #BlackMastodon" comments might be misunderstood. Mastodon likely won't get much traction until it's seen by the masses the way they see Twitter... as a casual hangout. I think it's going to be very hard to effect culture change in an established online society w/o actually creating a space for the underserved to thrive on their own first b/c trying to be welcoming won't get far. The neighbors need to want to move in on their own before "trying" is meaningful.

@Julie@social.coop “Make your own instance” is especially unhelpful to the targets of abuse because you’re just telling them to create a really attractive attack surface. Better to have a crap ton of instances with good policies and active moderation teams. “Make your own instance” is for people with money and access and time who want to make their own rules or nerd out about something specific, it’s a totally different problem.

@Julie@social.coop what are some examples of Mastodon not being welcoming for black people ?

@Julie@social.coop I can’t even conceive of how mean spirited you’d have to be to suggest that!

@Julie@social.coop Fedi should be as antiracist as possible and hostile to all forms of prejudice and bigotry. We should also be hostile to anyone that advocates bigoted ideas. Including capitalism, which is inherently racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, etc. and will destroy all humans and all other life on this planet if we can't stop it from dividing us.

@Julie@social.coop anyone saying that should be kicked out. I WANT more diversity here! The more diverse the better!

@Julie@social.coop I'm happy to see it as a hashtag. I want to know what people think who are different from me. Aren't people at least curious? Are egos that tender?

@Julie@social.coop Black people are telling Black people what instances to use, based on having moderators who will actually support Black voices against bad faith accusations of violating instance rules. As a white man I wouldn't tell a Black person that they SHOULD use a different instance. But this stuff is clearly important in practice.

@Julie@social.coop I totally agree that we need to work harder to encourage black, Asian, First Nations, and other minority voices here. And LGBTQ, feminist, and differently abled groups as well. I always read and boost the comments from Black voices when I see them. And I follow them, although so far only one seems to be posting regularly, and he is a long-term Mastodon member and site manager.

@Julie@social.coop I've not been on Mastodon for long and therefore not noticed any racism. Call me naive, but I will be gutted if it raises it's ugly head.

@Julie@social.coop With accessibility it's easy to get (blindness being probably the most obvious) but I would wager a guess that the majority of people have genuinely no clue what issues Black people might be facing *on fedi in particular*. (I.e., not counting general racism that's not limited to fedi.) I care about racism a lot but the only thing that comes to mind is white supremacist or free speech extremist instances, which all the major instances block anyway, so I've got no clue either what the issues might be. Would really like to understand. (Also, which Black people are we talking about? The experiences of Black Americans are probably quite different than those of the various African nations?) That recent thread from the Black guy whose name I now forgot (something with Aziz I think) didn't really help me understand it either. There were screenshots of a guy being rude because he didn't believe there were any issues. (The sarcastic comment saying something like "who's preventing Black people from joining fedi, the KKK?") As much as I agree it was a very rude comment, it didn't seem like anyone was explaining the issue. Neither in the screenshots, nor in the thread talking about the screenshots. If you have any links or so I'd appreciate it. And I'd recommend sharing them so people can read up on what the issue is. After all, complaining that people don't get something doesn't do any good when people aren't provided the means to learn it.

@Julie@social.coop Yeah, I think it would be a lot more helpful if white people would make sure that their instances had Black moderators, instead of telling Black people to make their own instances. Like, if you want spaces to be welcoming to Black people, make sure that power is shared with Black people. If all the people running a space are white, you can't be surprised when you create a white space.

@Julie@social.coop I would like to know why they are being told to find another instance. On my instance, all are welcome. All are required to respect each other, no mater race, religion, sexual orientation. Hate is not promoted nor tolerated and you are allowed to have your beliefs. People who do not follow those general rules are not allowed on mine. But, if you are nice and can respect each other. Come on over :)

@Julie@social.coop the worst part of this is that a black instance and a disabled instance already exists because of this issue with people being unaccepting

@emc2@indieweb.social 2022-12-16 17:51
@Julie@social.coop Is there any sort of triage list for this, or an effort to compile one? As in "these are the issues", and then we can break them out by what kinds of remediations are necessary?

@Julie@social.coop Is this a thing that happens? Truth be told if someone is going to discriminate on this basis and is running yout instance you may wish to reconsider your membership in it because it sounds like that instance is run by fascists.

@Julie@social.coop I don't see in what respect Mastodon should be any different to people depending on skin colour.
