@huntingdon@mstdn.social @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org the problem with refits on carriers is that they would need ships as big as them to carry that much stuff and a real ship yard to do repairs. there's a reason the navy does it this way. but it assumes regular schedules of refit/resupply at places with dry docks, that you can get dozens of warehouses filled by loads of semi-trucks for supplies, etc. you also need time off for crews. carriers are what? 5000 folks? and that's just the carrier, not the whole carrier group. this is like someone trying to run a race car and doing gas and maintenance and tires like it's a honda civic driven by a church goer with 4k miles a year. you're going to ruin engines, tires, pit crews.

    @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Obviously, refitting a ship could not be done on the fly, outside of port. But resupply of food, toiletries, many essential parts, and crew exchanges could be.
