e-bikes are really exciting! it’s a bike with excellent acceleration, handling, and hill climbing capability regardless of system, rider, or cargo weight. a mid-motor with torque sensors perfectly matches its motor response to the movements of your legs. it’s the most efficient EV possible, and you can improve its efficiency by bicycling with skill, and doing so improves your health. that’s amazing! a bicycle that trades almost all of the above for pure speed and the ability to hold down a throttle lever to go is really fucking boring actually

@zzt@mas.to I love mine. I went from a sedentary 52 year old who was very overweight and could only cycle a short distance (ie to the shops back).. to a slightly less sedentary, less overweight 56 year old who happily does 20 to 30 mile loops around London and reaches AMAZING PEAK SPEEDS of a blistering 15mph.. 25mph if I cycle downhill. XD I still get a workout but not so much my heart explodes from over exertion !!!

  • @zzt@mas.to The thing I really like about eBikes is that they let you independently control effort and speed. Ages ago, I saw a prototype of a bike with an all-electric drive train, which took this to the extreme. You could pedal hard while slowing down and it would charge the battery, or you could use the accelerator and not put any force on the pedals to go fast without any effort, or anything between.

@zzt@mas.to not you being ableist, eh? Maybe consider that some people need a throttle to help them get around. Stop stereotyping people who ride perfectly legal and sensible Class 2 bikes.

@zzt@mas.to My class 1 e-bike with a decent pannier on it is fantastic! I bike everywhere, and steep hills are still steep, but if I have to climb them I can, and I can carry a good load of groceries for myself easily. Can't imagine _wanting_ to go faster than I do without, like, some kind of exoskeleton for protection in case I wipe. 😂 I've gotten up to around 30-35 mph on a smooth downhill and that feels too fast on most surfaces. 15-20 is just fine.
