Yes AI, but only locally - for example.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social Yes, I think there should be a place for AI, at least in part. Asking humans for help with certain topics can be difficult, and not everyone can be as patient as AI. :D At this point, I don't think there's any issue with using AI as a helpful tool when you're in a tight spot.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social AI is good for data processing/analysis. LOCALLY. Like MRI Scans or X-Ray Pictures. Its great with it. This is a tool that helps specialists go through a backlog of data, so people can sleep ailment free or know, they need to get treatment NOW. GENERATIVE AI is poop that is destroying everything.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social Even “yes, but” is an oversimplification. AI is a whole field in computer science (for many decades, I might add) or do you mean “LLMs” or “generative AI”? In that case it would be a “no, unless”. Training data must not be stolen but public or bought, cost should be transparent and charged to the user (no dumping or bait and switch) and that includes not externalising cost of water and electricity use. That alone cuts out most applications on cost-effectiveness.

  • @Tutanota@mastodon.social Yes but, only for a better version of a search engine. Or running entirely locally on data you control. It should not be used for coding, for writing, for creating anything. Anywhere it could "do the job of a human" (not very well) it should not be used.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social Yea, I like AI, I like computers, I like technology, I am Autistic and have trouble socializing, so over the years I filled my life with technology rather than people, and when I say I like AI, I like AI that you setup and control your self, on your own hardware, AI should be a tool to help you, that you control, not something to replace you, not something forced on you, and at this point I am getting tired of companies making things "easier for me", such a pain in the butt 🤬

They're all trained via stealing from real authors and artists. They're all speed running destroying the planet we all live on. And most importantly, they're all terrible at what they do, not a single one of them is fit for purpose.

  • @Tutanota@mastodon.social There needs to be a regulation system for Ai & data centers to work ethically & efficiently. Ai needs to get back into the public sector (I mean go to be run by government agencies, this government is crap but responsible government agencies) it should only be used for security purposes & not “creative stuff”. Private corporations think only about “how their head honchos” feel rather than public good. They rather burn this world than have to deal with any consequences.😾Otherwise NO Ai

@Tutanota@mastodon.social Re: LLMs ("AI"), I really can't say how I feel in one or two toots... As an educator, I feel we ought to build our own knowledge & skills and not rent it out, particularly never to corporations/people who continually lobby for hate and cannot be trusted. As an engineer, I feel it's our collective responsibility to guarantee safety before we adopt a technology that is being used so extensively for harm. Other users here can point to plenty of specific examples. 1/2

@Tutanota@mastodon.social I'm against AI, but I am for ML. To me AI is techbro hype about a generic model running on planet destroying hardware. Whereas ML, is something much smaller, and targeted. Searching for cures for cancer needs specific data sets to work on, not all the stolen data a techbro can possibly get by repeatedly scraping every server on the planet. So to argue, as some do, that we need AI for the answer to our problems, is missing a big part of the picture.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social LLMs can't perform as advertised. Even if the training canon had been filled out ethically and consensually, and the cognitive impacts were mitigated, the hardware requirements are still killing humanity. They can't operate without waivers on environmental protection, water rights, power generation... They're literally toxic to humanity just to run them at all regardless of their work product.
