I think the idea of Wayland is fucking fantastic, and I *also* think that the people working on it (I don't just mean the core protocol folks) fucked up thoroughly by rolling it out as a default without first ensuring that already-used functionality wouldn't break and without making an unopinionated Wayland server along the lines of riverwm available in documented form off the bat, because now everybody knows Wayland as "that thing that broke my system and doesn't work the same anywhere" and it's going to take *years* if not decades to undo that damage And like, that *sucks* because it actually solves a lot of genuinely difficult problems very well, but people are not going to care about any of that if it very visibly *doesn't* solve the problems closest to the user

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech While I agree, I also think that if they did what you describe, it might never have gotten the critical mass it needed.

@joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech Yeah, I feel like Wayland is nice, but I also feel like it was rolled out too far, too soon, and I think still only like a third of apps that are supposed to be able to do some sort of screensharing have been updated to support Wayland
