@veronica@explains.social I tried to see what AI could do for writing code in various ways. Without exception, AI was astonishingly bad. Raccoons can find much higher quality food out of a trash bin than AI slop.

@veronica@explains.social The quote I saw recently on this score: "I want to write. You want to have written. We are not the same."

@veronica@explains.social Could an AI enjoy meowing as much as I do? No. No it could not.

@veronica@explains.social I once looked into AI¹ for proofreading my spicy alt-texts, and it was so *atrociously* bad at it that I had to wonder if it had ever even heard of a pun or innuendo before. If anything, it made me resolve to be even better at writing the AccessibilityIsHotAF alt-text just to spite it. ¹ free tier; I don't mind wasting a billionaire's resources.

@veronica@explains.social It feels like we're trying to palm off learning stuff and making stuff. That's been our species' whole thing!

@veronica@explains.social “AI can do all that” people keep saying this type of stuff and my immediate reaction is “NO, it can’t”.

@veronica@explains.social for me, my creativity is like an ache if I don't get to express it. It's not a task I need convenienced away, it's what I WANT to do. I suspect most of us that do creative work or even just like to make things are like that regardless of what media we express ourselves in. It's something the sloppers seem incapable of comprehending.

@veronica@explains.social The idea that “AI can do all that” is false. It cannot produce anything that is accurate, beyond the simplest levels of understanding. Try using AI search in a subject you know well. In my recent experience, AI “summaries” provided by search engines have misidentified the instrument played by a noted classical musician and have actively prevented me from finding a recipe I was looking for. If I want to find anything on Wikipedia, I now turn to the German and French language sites, which have greater detail and tend to corroborate each other, rather than the frequently degraded English language pages. The idea that this poorly designed tool can create anything of value would be laughable, if not for the tremendous harm that it is doing to the environment, to politics, to society, and to human psychology. Humans have never invented anything worse than this decadence in a bottle, this genie of stupidity, AI.

@veronica@explains.social Along the same vein, I like thinking about player pianos. The piano has been playing itself since 1863, but I still play piano because I enjoy it.

@veronica@explains.social I spent today finding out how to create an elastic job to pull data from a complex database into a simplified "reporting" database without clobbering the live data to death during business hours and then writing several stored procedures to make this maintainable. I can't see how any "AI" could have applied the 18 years of intimate knowledge I have of that DB schema and its quirks and produced something one of my colleagues could follow and maintain.
