So if today's hype cycle is to be believed, some OpenAI model hacked Hugging Face Cool. Cool I'm just curious - which OpenAI execs are going to have their lives ruined and go to jail for this? Asking for Aaron Swartz

@danielcornell@mastodon.social After being confused and outraged as you I actually went to read what exactly happened and it is a 100% PR stunt. OpenAI made what is basically a malware AI designed to hack through the local defences put in place by the company IT department. They partnered with Hugging Face to test it. They thus put it in some container and the tool was able to get internet access and access some files. Hugging Face apparently detected the threat while it was happening and actually stopped it. So the entire news is actually that some malware software was able to compromise some not well defined system as designed in a controlled test.

I am just a lay bystander but every time these companies announce some outlandish claim that their “AI” has done because it is “too advanced”… the lie and the grift seem obvious, but the exit strategy is not. For the individuals, I mean. Like, is the grift to just continue as a hype machine forever? What happens when the bubble bursts for poor Sam? Will the lies ever catch up to him? A lot of people are going to lose a lot of money and suffer as a result of these lies. Are they betting on the political environment to continue being so supportive of doublespeak for… the rest of their lives? It feels like reality has to catch up at some point. 🤷‍♂️🤞
