When you ultimately fail since it wasn't sincere to begin with, you end up in the same pool as everyone else - with those who never claimed any kind of virtue.   Thoughts on #opensource that allows for #LLM contributions. Even for projects where I am continuing to use the upstream project - #firefox / #librewolf, #jellyfin - the first thing I've done is to stop eating the freshly made dogfood. Jellyfin has an RC out. In the past, I might have tested it. Likewise, my main browser for years had been Firefox Nightly. No longer. The first shoe to drop is engagement - why should I test what #AI wrote? I'll let other people eat the slop instead.

  Thought experiment. Linus tells us that the #Linux project uses #opensource because it results in "better technology". Does that mean that if some superior closed source kernel sources became available Linux would merge it? Clearly, since Linux has never been a "social warrior" project, it shouldn't matter if the code is pirated, since technical merit is paramount.   It seems that #opensource licenses were meant to protect capital, not people. They enabled expropriating labor without pay, and now that capital can steal labor sans-license, the mask is off and it is "just tech". Fundamentally, it seems that #freesoftware failed to recognize that like conservatism, there are in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. #opensource bound volunteer labor but did not protect it. #li...

  I'm pretty weirded out by the fact that #Firefox is building in a new #VPN service in the next version, but there is no reference to it in Firefox Nightly. This reminds me of Looking Glass - and not in a good way. I realize this is not a study, but my recollection of that event was Mozilla management skipped the train release process to insert code directly into release. VPN isn't enabled in Nightly today -- I haven't tried beta, but I doubt it is there. Very weird...

  #Mozilla released #Firefox 148 featuring the #AI "Kill Switch" that has been making the rounds. The design of the switch is meant to absolve Mozilla of any responsibility for your use of its AI. It is a trap. It is meant to switch discussion from whether Mozilla should be doing AI, to whether you can *choose* to not use it. Don't believe their lies.
