To me, it seems clear that the reason that Linux has more activity and driver support than the BSDs is because of copyleft and reciprocity - two aspects of "social justice" that protected contributors from their code being used without giving back. I wrote about this a while ago: https://www.quippd.com/writing/2026/04/08/ai-code-is-hollowing-out-open-source-and-maintainers-are-looking-the-other-way.html but it feels like with the advent of #AI people are willing to look the other way to access the technical contributions of people who never consented to their works being infringed.

@yoasif@mastodon.social It's about freedom, but I wouldn't categorize it as a social justice warrior project. Software freedom is apolitical, or ought to be. It is, in many cases, better technology, though that's not always the case.
