@veronica@explains.social you know, you present a very convincing case. It's strange that they're so closely associated with Disco when they really don't sound much like disco at all? A lot of guitar and piano driven stuff, not as much focus on the rhythm section. I never really noticed it before. I always just accepted them as presented by the zeitgeist.

@veronica@explains.social honestly, all the well-known songs of ABBA are pop songs, and I think that's mostly why people think they're a pop-related band. Also, at the time they were performing you may be right that having women performers was also influencing things, but I'm not so sure. When I think of Queen for example, I think of a rock band playing b/w glam & hard rock, even though they actually had one "reggae-ish" album too. But one album doesn't mean they're a reggae band, if that makes sense.

@veronica@explains.social I hope blatant sexism is not their only reasoning process because in that case how on earth do they explain songs from Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, The Bangles, Starship (or a bunch of other groups with female leads on earworm inducing songs I heard while growing up). Not to say that any of those bands couldn't perform the pop-y stuff when the wanted to either.
