@veronica@explains.social honestly, all the well-known songs of ABBA are pop songs, and I think that's mostly why people think they're a pop-related band. Also, at the time they were performing you may be right that having women performers was also influencing things, but I'm not so sure. When I think of Queen for example, I think of a rock band playing b/w glam & hard rock, even though they actually had one "reggae-ish" album too. But one album doesn't mean they're a reggae band, if that makes sense.

  • @veronica@explains.social all that being said, I put some bands in the "hard-rock" category that some friends put in "rock" etc. Your assessment isn't invalid in the least,. obviously. :-) (As for frontwomen "making" a band not being a rock band, I'm really unsure this is the case nowadays, when considering all the women fronting bands going from pop to death-metal bands – but I'm pretty sure you were not implying this for contemporary bands, were you?)
