Idea: an IT consultancy that isn’t a machine for making shareholders rich, but instead is about supporting employees.
It’s called BIG QUEER NERDS, and the clue’s in the name. Queer and neurodivergent people are talent-rich and chronically underemployed. Pool the talent, share the money. A THREAD.
The model: employees above all. No shareholders to appease, no infinite-growth treadmill. Profits shared among all staff - seniority sets split, but when the company does well, everyone does.
That means everyone. Right down to the most menial roles.
It would run as a legally defined cooperative.
The benefits bit:
Reliable base salary + profit share on topMinimum salary floor - nobody earns below itGenuinely unlimited sick leave, no questions askedNo-questions-asked non-sickness time off, up to a generous thresholdRemote-first, with a home-office allowance
The structural bit:
Flake-tolerant staffing; more people per task, so a bad brain day doesn’t sink anythingA client-facing buffer layer so queer/ND staff never have to absorb hostile customersStrong anti-discrimination protectionsStaff can vote to veto a client outrightRadical transparency in everything not prevented by law
The honest catch: the base salary would likely start below market rate. Dependable and plannable, but lower.
In exchange, we'd offer real power in company decisions, real protections, and a share of everything the company earns legally protected by the company definition.
So - a question for queer and neurodivergent tech folks.
Would you take a lower-than-market base salary in exchange for all of the above, including the ability to validate against the company financials that you're not being taken for a ride?
Genuinely curious.
Replies, reposts, and “here’s why this won’t work” all welcome.
What I think makes this different is that the company isn't about pursuing higher and higher profits, or seeking acquisition and dicking the staff. Though equity would be involved to make an acquisition benefit everyone. But it wouldn't be a tasty acquisition target.
It's about paying the salaries of everyone involved, ideally with a bit more to put away to allow for emergent situations.

@syn@basilisk.gallery I've always loved the idea of kickstarting a co-operative company that hired folks (of all types) and operated under similar policies -- base salary, plus one share for each hour worked. At the end of the month, profits are split based on shares. Shares can be donated back to the team or a pool to use for emergencies (like sick leave). My only concern is that it might be a bit of a nightmare to manage... Herding cats and all that...
