@libroraptor@mastodon.nz Explain the 'why', not just the 'how', and you keep students interested. It's not that difficult.

@RandamuMaki@mstdn.social @libroraptor@mastodon.nz It depends on the student. There are students who will be into chemistry purely for the analytical & pure science aspects of it. And there will be students that need the narrative of the historical, economic, and cultural significance of it. Teaching should be able to accommodate both students.

@RandamuMaki@mstdn.social @libroraptor@mastodon.nz I remember not grokking organic chem until the night before the final exam, for exactly this reason. As a result of my light bulb moment, my final exam score was double either of the midterm exam scores, at 50% instead of 25%. I still passed the class (with a C!) because the grading curve was very low...
