Jupiter: I have to make a Linked In account for this communications class Me: Seriously? Jupiter: I hate this. I'm supposed to select my industry? They don't list College Student as an industry Me: Do they have one for Sarcastic Retorts Jupiter: Wait! It's only worth ten points! Can I just write EAT SHIT in this text box? Me: 🤔 Jupiter: Okay. I really don't want to do this. I'm taking the L. I'd rather lose the points. Jupes wrote on the assignment (and gave me permission to share): Hello! I'm not comfortable creating an account on Linkedin. I prefer to keep my social media presence small and largely private. Creating a whole new account on a website I have never used before, filled with my personal information, simply to fulfill a class requirement, is something I am deeply uncomfortable with. I will not be creating an account, nor connecting with classmates, and I accept the impact this will have on my grade for this assignment. Thank you!

  • @hollie@social.coop If y'all are interested in a suggestion, try emailing the professor and asking for an alternative assignment instead. You can suggest something like making a Mastodon account, a Matrix server, a Signal chat, or whatever else can meet the spirit of making an account online that allows you to network with others in a community without specifically being locked to MS.

Jupes and I are continuing to bitchfest about this class. They're majoring in Physics but they have to take a Communications class as part of the General Ed. Next week they're supposed to make a podcast episode, about how AI has impacted online communications, pros and cons. The assignment includes the following: "Discuss the positive aspects of generative AI's influence on online communication. Include examples of how AI has improved efficiency, convenience, and user experience in various communication contexts, and cite your sources." Their GPA is great, so they can afford some loss of points? But they can't fail the class, they will have to figure out how to pass it while trying to maintain their own integrity. The expectations in this class are pretty shocking to me.
