Apparently there's a new NYT op-ed on grade inflation (not reading it, not linking it) You know what would stop grade inflation? Getting rid of grades! Grades were invented to rank & sort people (first students, and later instructors & schools), and they continue to be used for that purpose. It would be awesome if we stopped doing that!

@belehaa@wandering.shop there's a minimum you absolutely *must* have grades for, and that is pass and fail. As an instructor, you have to certify whether each of the students in your class has demonstrated sufficient learning of the material you are teaching.

@belehaa@wandering.shop one of the best things I did starting in 2019 was to move to an upgrading system/policy with suggested/flexible deadlines on assignments. Assignments are graded as satisfactory/unsatisfactory with feedback and opportunity to resubmit (if initial submission was within suggested deadline or close). Final projects allow for students to pick relevant topic and also to a large extent format. 1/2
