I convinced my kids that they throw you out of the airplane if you smoke cigarettes. They spent a good chunk of the flight looking to see if anyone would light up.

This is the correct way to lie to kids: it's ridiculous, amusing, harmless, reaffirms their belief that smoking is super bad for you, and occupies their attention for a while.
