I admire IT people 20 years in who still run home labs. It's like coming home from the egg salad sandwich factory, hearing, "what do you want for dinner, honey?" And saying, "same thing we have every night: egg salad sandwiches."

@SwiftOnSecurity@infosec.exchange For me, it's more like I know how to make sandwiches, I like making sandwiches, and I get home from the egg salad sandwich factory where my job is rolling racks of bread down the hall, and I can finally make an actual sandwich and whatever kind of sandwich I want.

@SwiftOnSecurity@infosec.exchange I had a home lab running for around 5 years, then nothing for around 15 years, and now have one again. Mini servers have made the whole thing a lot more affordable(1), mostly silent, and basically zero extra heat in the room. Having so much fun self-hosting on my own infra again! (1) well, they were until the RAM shortages started impacting EVERYTHING...

Not sure if a single Celeron machine counts as a home lab, but at least I know for a fact that nobody's upselling me on whatever service I install in it

@SwiftOnSecurity@infosec.exchange well, what else to do when your corp changes the way how to get a lab every few years and you want to lab in your lab and not build a new one every so often?

@SwiftOnSecurity@infosec.exchange at home you don't have to argue against putting shit into food, and you don't have to lose and give up these arguments.
