One revolt kicked off because tax collectors were being creepy at the young women of the village. I’m trying to think of similar things happening today. Anyone have ideas?

@akareilly@hachyderm.io defenstration also is a proud European tradition And at least one nation is still practicing it, but they keep forgetting the traditional heap of manure below the window

@akareilly@hachyderm.io The Dutch really should go back to eating their prime minister. Maybe not for awful reasons like the last time, but for good reasons like hating the prime minister!

@akareilly@hachyderm.io think you've forgotten about "modern" methods like the guillotine.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io Hard agree European is a tricky word, especially together with traditional. Depending on the century values would vary like dialects. There weren’t even national values before the 19th century at the earliest. So traditional European values could also be universal human rights, democracy and ever deeper unity.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io Same thinking that'd presume their true place in life is as the nobility not realising they'd be in the dirt with the rest of us serfs.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io We can also adopt other traditional European values, such as witchcraft, gay sex, and having a very positive opinion of trees.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io Because nobles and peasants have different values, of course.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io Because the idea of a single and distinct European tradition is a fabrication of hegemons.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io or defenestration? We haven’t had a good defenestration in a while.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io I'd offer that the nobles PR firms trot out "xenophobia and patriarchy" as a distraction, because to blame the other is to redirect anger at their own situation. Also: amazing this thread got so far without a single Monty Python and the Holy Grail reference.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io Either that or periodic phased in militarization of absolutely everything.

i think "tradional european values" is used by bigots as an euphemism for conservative christianism, but loose enough to include the ancient philosophers. That expression always pisses me off, first cos Albania is very much in europe but not christian. And then cos the enlightenment is thanks to the arab philosophers who kept copies of the ancient texts that the europeans had burnt down during the middle ages. @akareilly@hachyderm.io

@akareilly@hachyderm.io the proud European tradition of finding a rich white guy and plundering his silverware.
