@jschauma@mstdn.social Reminds me, when I used to use an LLM only to convert json structures to jsdoc... turns out there is an NPM package which does exactly that, only thing missing was a CLI, but that isn't very hard to do (in case anyone is interested: https://git.iedsoftworks.com/neintonine/json2jsdoc )

@jschauma@mstdn.social Drives me a bit bonkers to see folks with their "I built this lightweight¹ CLI application in Rust using $LLM" when the core functionality can be performed by a shell one-liner. I mean, sure, a tiny piece of me is glad they're getting into software-tool development, but that's such a horrible way to do it. 😑 ⸻ ¹ lightweight = "only has 150 Cargo module dependencies and takes an hour to `cargo build` the thing"

@jschauma@mstdn.social In the '80s I had secretaries and janitors at work where I was a sysadmin coming to me for help with the shell scripts they had written of their own initiative to make some of the routine stuff they had to do easier. Only a few lines of code, but they did understand what they were doing.

@jschauma@mstdn.social I think there is merit to what you're saying (over reliance on the tool), but also consider that it is a UX failure that it is easier to get an LLM to do the thing than to remember a set of esoteric incantations (assuming you knew them to start with)

@jschauma@mstdn.social As far back as the early 90s my superpower was that I read the manuals for my OSes and learned about all the included utilities and what they could do, while other people were out buying 3rd party utilities that were perhaps fancier looking but still just did approximately the same thing. Getting good results from basic standard tools was kind of my signature throughout my career. I'm retired now, but I'm convinced the value of this superpower would only be amplified today.
