It is hard to look at these numbers and come away w/ any other conclusion than flooding the zone with disinformation really works. You have to wonder how many folks stayed home b/c of disinformation. Folks getting their news from social media is 💯 a curse on democracy.

@shafik@hachyderm.io Sad state of affairs indeed. That inflation issue is dicey though. While the rate of inflation *now* is near historic average, the rate in the two preceding years was quite high, meaning the inflated prices are here to stay. Only deflation would fix that issue but of course we can't have that.

@shafik@hachyderm.io well, social media, and fox news, and "One America News Network", and Sinclair, and christian radio... https://journa.host/@MAD_democracy/113449165516682288 ...and the extreme susceptibility to social pressure to conform that constantly operates in practically everyone (and which has been shown experimentally to be capable of overriding whatever sense we would otherwise have gained from direct observation).

@shafik@hachyderm.io And now the billionaires that own the disinformation ad networks also own the US president…

@shafik@hachyderm.io and that to combat misinformation you need to actually invest in access to education (beyond just technical education) and you also need to have a workable story for people about their future not just facts. One of the bigger failures was touting positive jobs numbers without having a story for addressing the cost of education, healthcare, workers rights, etc... (Harris got started on that but she started late and was handed a limp fish to work with)

  • @shafik@hachyderm.io Given the number of articles I’ve read in the Murdoch press where the headline and 90% of the text directly contradicts the data from primary source, I don’t think it’s entirely fair to blame social media.
