I sometimes wonder if there's an possible future where we can somehow make search _better_ instead of _worse_ with LLM technology, like making it easier to find relevant things that humans wrote and discover new cool people and learn from them instead of hiding everything behind a wall of AI summaries that are often wrong i've been trying duckduckgo and kagi but it has not been a great experience for me (please don't tell me that you can ask generative LLMs to do searches) (2/?)

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca I think people with mixed feelings are posting less than the people who are really upset, which makes it look like everyone is really upset. I've definitely got mixed feelings about all this.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca there's a strong feeling reminiscent of cryptocurrency where people with a vested financial interest are really pushing the idea that we should adopt pervasively now and find out whether they're useful later. This is really annoying me because they are actually useful for some things—as e.g. vulnerability research is showing—but it should be a sober cost/benefit decision rather than a mad rush driven by executives thirsty for layoffs.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca I think there is a shortage of good writups about progmatic use, like how to use it for really good outcomes the way you would feel proud of getting out. Vs just slop/vibes/etc

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca Otoh the witch hunt that will immediately follow from any post about AI might not make it worth it

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca Yeah completely in the same boat as you. They have recently massively helped me deal with quite major illness; Because they are so fast, they give you enough activation energy to explore approaches and ideas you otherwise wouldn't; I hate the inevitability that this is going to make inequality worse; I am very fearful of the impending recession they're going to cause; I viscerally hate the politics and views of those who run these companies.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca I was just thinking of your zines! (the last one I’ve read was pre-covid tbh). Pretty wild that right now I can have a robot synthesise a tutorial on any niche topic you can think of in seconds basically. Anyway, there is a lot of noise in LLMs being everywhere, but I think you gotta think of it as a force of nature and just ignore and weather it: a lot of PMs and directors in large orgs panicking about missing the boat and shoving it everywhere, it’s gonna wash out eventually.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca had a similar experience, but it really takes away the fun of finding out yourself.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca I think posting stuff that works is important, there are still people who think it's completely useless. You will get pushback but be honest what works and what doesn't

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca it’s like it makes one thing slightly better but at the cost of making 10 other things a lot worse
