For those interested the overwhelming amount of responses are basically that Immich is good and worth trying.

@rustyshelf@mastodon.social I use synology photos to sync/backup my family’s mobile phone photos and camera photos. We have at least 5-6 devices actively syncing to it. It meets our requirements, and we use tailscale for remote access.

@rustyshelf@mastodon.social Pretty sure @ironicbadger@techhub.social just moved from Google Photos → Immitch and has had good things to say…?

@rustyshelf@mastodon.social I've been running immich since it reached stable status in October 2025. I use it in parallel with iCloud. It has worked flawlessly and I find it faster than the photos app and web interface.

@rustyshelf@mastodon.social I use Immich alongside iCloud so not quite what you’re asking, but it’s been a reliable way to store all my phone’s photos in another place that I own.

@rustyshelf@mastodon.social I can get immich installed on a mac (i tried 2 different machines so far), but I've been trying to import 50K images (~150GB) since sunday and can't figure out a way to do that without it crashing. Will keep trying.

@rustyshelf@mastodon.social it’s very very good unless you want to keep RAW+JPG. They haven’t added “auto stacking” yet, so each version will show up as its own asset in Immich.

@dfgomes@mastodon.social I kinda use my email address promiscuously. The spam filtering is good enough that anyone can have it. Hide my phone number. Now that would be a cool feature!
