@joXn@wandering.shop @benfry@information.garden @cstross@wandering.shop @mjtsai@mastodon.social I'm a writer and I've never used Word. Went from Locoscript to Appleworks, which became Corel somewhere along the way, to WordPerfect and Open Office. Now I use LibreOffice and that suits me fine.

As one of the technical writers on Word for DOS, Word for Windows, and Word for Mac, I'm embarrassed at what it's mutated into. I no longer use it except where required. @joXn@wandering.shop @benfry@information.garden @cstross@wandering.shop @mjtsai@mastodon.social As far as getting documents to look exactly the way I want without unnecessary effort goes, it’s a toss-up between Signum on the Atari ST and ClarisWorks on a beige Mac for me… everything since then has been hidden & undiscoverable behaviours wrapped up in bloat.

It's in the literature, although few read it, and no managers believe it. Software hits a point where it has the right features, at the right level, for the right audience. It has the minimum # of bugs. All changes after this point make the software _worse_. You get more complex or more fragile or more bugs. We have to learn to leave well-enough alone.
