And now the most important thing: If you're an Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma or similar program user, what are the most important features that even the most basic app needs for you to consider trying it? #Adobe #illustrator #Figma #Inkscape #design #illustration #art

@gloopsies@fosstodon.org I really really really like the way affinity has a pixel/vector/and layout editor all in one program.

@gloopsies@fosstodon.org I think the most important aspect is that it needs to be Inkscape? More seriously, I struggle to justify spending time trying out tools that aren't F/OSS. If I can't legally share it with other people, if I can't modify it to fit my workflows, if its not owned by its contributors, it just feels like a waste of my time because in my mind, part of being a responsible creator is making sure that others have access to the tools I have

@gloopsies@fosstodon.org Movable guide lines Several shapes. Being able to set dimensions numerically. A color chooser.

@gloopsies@fosstodon.org Depends on your aim I guess - if it's for casual designers a template library would be nice, and bonus if you can export to PDF/X-1A and CMYK without user intervention. That's what Canva is lacking. A Canva-like native application with path editing support would be really nice. If it's for professionals (good luck with that), it'll be nice to have parametric modifiers, like variables for the whole drawing. I don't think any existing graphics app has that.

@gloopsies@fosstodon.org I'm an Inkscape user and the only reason I can imagine to try another app is that it has some novel feature not in Inkscape. If it just has the same features I wouldn't be bothered.

@gloopsies@fosstodon.org The most important thing for me are Boolean operation. A vector editor without them is useless. Then are you planning to do an vector editor for a special target group?

@gloopsies@fosstodon.org For me three things are essential: nestable artboards (think Frames in Figma), excellent SVG support (open and save SVGs, being able to copy a selection as an SVG right from the editing UI) and vector networks with corner rounding and path bending without having to use handles if I don’t want to. This project seems like a huge undertaking, but I wish you all the best for it! Is there any way to follow along with development?
