@ChristineMalec@mstdn.ca Personally I find that taking a few moments to write the alt text helps me really think myself about what even sighted people should be taking from the picture. After all, the only point in posting images is to illustrate the point made in the post. No point, no picture!

@ChristineMalec@mstdn.ca as a sighted person, I've found Technology Connections a great role model for finding the motivation to add alt text. When you realize you can have actual fun writing them, sometimes with little Easter eggs specifically for people reading the alts, it becomes another medium for creative joy, instead of an altruistic chore.

@ChristineMalec@mstdn.ca Sometimes I'm tired and am tempted not to bother with an alt text, but I always and up adding them. It's a great exercise in trying to accurately describe image and mood as well!

@ChristineMalec@mstdn.ca Hi, excuse me, I used to try to add fun, descriptive, concise alt text (even for videos!) but I’ve been told it was a chore to read alt text longer than 80 characters, which frankly is frustrating as a sighted Mastodon user. Would you rather read alt text up to 80 char, or are you fine with longer text, and why? I haven’t tried out Orca yet, but does it depend on the hardware (e.g. is it more comfortable with Braille reading bars)?

@ChristineMalec@mstdn.ca Let me guess, things like just "picture of a dog" or some gabled BS from OCR software is maybe fitting the definition of alt text, but kind of worthless to you? What about when description turns into interpretation? I'm always unsure about that. There may be pictures that are kind of pointless just described by what can be seen by a very neutral observer. On the other hand I don't want to impose MY interpretation and be more neutral. Really interested in blind people's thoughts about this, also those of @hspmauli@norden.social
