Voice to text, visualising CSVs in the terminal, managing software from releases on GitHub, a mini Android tablet for your wall, and Amiga music on Linux in Discoveries. Plus Ubuntu embracing AI makes us wonder if we should just stop having the same old arguments. https://latenightlinux.com/late-night-linux-episode-385/ #podcast #linux #opensource

@latenightlinux@mastodon.social I had to skunk and reload one of my primary workstations due to years of cruft from in-place major version upgrades getting too painful to deal with. It was a VERY close thing whether it got Ubuntu 26.04 or Debian whateverthefuck. It got 26.04. But the shine is so damn far off. I don't even want to ACKNOWLEDGE its cute little animal name. It just doesn't feel like it deserves that much of a personality or feeling that it's definitely on my side anymore.

@latenightlinux@mastodon.social Joe's point about means of production is spot on, but misses an even bigger issue, especially for AI-assisted coding. The more you use it, the more you lose the ability to evaluate the code being generated, much less write it yourself if AI provider of choice raises prices / goes under / has an AI-assisted outage. Literally outsourcing "intelligence", except you're pissing away your own while buying the delusion of a machine's.

@latenightlinux@mastodon.social Describing the GenAI craze as a 'pendemic' is interesting. Perhaps that's a solution; try to limit your exposure, keep some distance from those 'infected' and wait for it to burn out?

@latenightlinux@mastodon.social thanks for an interesting episode, I liked Will's take on Speech-to-text. I did notice he said he pressed scroll lock, talked, and then waited for a transcription. He does not need to do that: I've cobbled together a wayland client for live transcription using local (whisper) model, here's a link to the repo: https://github.com/bjodah/whisper_streaming (I must admit I've only used the gnome extension so far, so the non-gnome wayland client is untested...).

  • @latenightlinux@mastodon.social Not really 'Linux' related, but I'm wondering what your thoughts are on RCS support > cooperation between Apple and Google and the effects on Whatsapp, Signal, Element, etc.

@latenightlinux@mastodon.social I am a bit late to this thread but wanted to say. I am a linux person, and a Late Night Linux listener because I am not into bollox. Which is exactly why I would be super happy if there was a Hybrid Cloud Show equivalent in the LNL family that actually covered AI - _properly_, without hype and with real expertise.
