@seachanger@alaskan.social It's a very weird feeling when your oncologist says to you "We are just waiting for insurance approval" for a treatment. So the insurer dictates standards of care. That is incredibly dangerous imho.

Fun fact: Americans pay more per capita in taxes toward health care than Canadians do, yet Canadians have more coverage for essential care, all of which is tax funded. *Every penny* paid in insurance premiums and copays *plus* a substantial dollar amount of that tax revenue is profit for insurance companies.

@seachanger@alaskan.social The other part of this that most people don’t know is that doctors spend a significant chunk of their workday, or more like off the clock time, fighting with insurance companies for pretty much anything at all for patients. One time at a meditation retreat I was chatting with an orthopedic doc. I said to him, “At least broken bones are clear cut, and you don’t have to fight with insurance companies.” He said, “I have to fight for every bone I set.”

@seachanger@alaskan.social Exactly. It's time we start saying means-testing care (instead of universal care) is not wasteful as in money down the drain, but a corruption of the system benefitting special interests, at the expense of our collective health.
