Tonight, I sent my public Facebook page into hibernation. I am leaving up as an archive of my work in the Senate and my work as a journalist. But I no longer find it fun or useful to post there - and my algorithm sends me is a never ending stream of racist, transphobic and smutty posts. That - plus the standard chronic abuse from trolls, which had always been there - and I’m done. Tomorrow I delete my Senate Instagram account too. Ah well. It was fun while it lasted. #Meta #Facebook

Part of this is a protest against Zuckerberg’s craven sell out to Trump and bro culture. And some of it is just a protest against American technocracy, writ large. But mostly, I’m just tired of needing a bleach wash for my eyes. I had curated a wonderful community of 12,000 fans, and I’ll miss them. I hope some will follow me here. But tonight, I’m feeling a mix of regret and relief, as this era comes to an end, thanks to entropy and enshitification.

@Paulatics@mstdn.ca I'm actually sad to hear that. I was just writing up an online strategy proposal for my gay church and, although I did recommend starting a Bluesky and/or Mastodon account and emphasizing YouTube over Facebook for posting videos, I was hoping we could still get something out of Facebook and Instagram for a while longer rather than having to go cold turkey just yet.

@Paulatics@mstdn.ca long time ago they discovered that anger content increases what they name "engagement", way more than content matching your interests. They don't really care about good or evil, they just want us to spend our time in their sh**holes, even if it's just fighting and hating. If we can't avoid hate speech landing in social networks, at least we should move to places where unhealthy behaviors are not promoted, no matter which ideology they belong to.
