@0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud This is great. But... From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NixOS "NixOS is a Linux distribution built around the Nix package manager. Unlike traditional Linux distributions, NixOS is configured using a functional language that describes the system configuration. It generates complete system profiles, enabling reproducible deployments, atomic upgrades, and system rollbacks." "The Linux kernel is written in C. The Nix package manager is written in C++." 🤦🏼‍♂️ 😆 #Windows #Linux #NixOS #France

@megatronicthronbanks@mastodon.social my instinctual response: bc it's likely unnecessarily complicated? Just like the French government.. (Snarky comment feel free to ignore) @0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud

@megatronicthronbanks@mastodon.social @0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud Probably because it's easy to deploy in a similar way to how Windows deployment software works, except it's actually built into the operating system. You can just flash a base Nix OS image to the internal hard drive & then copy one configuration file & the operating system sets itself up exactly how you have specified all on its own.

@megatronicthronbanks@mastodon.social @0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud It's worth looking at. It has a reputation for being difficult to use, but it's cool. However there have been numerous scandals about the developers or community moderators being shitty people.

@megatronicthronbanks@mastodon.social @0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud Have you considered LibreWolf & just turning off the extra overkill privacy things that inconvenience you & keeping the ones you like? I haven't used it yet but I've heard it's pretty good except for the default settings.

@megatronicthronbanks@mastodon.social @0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud Trying new things is good. I'll be trying it soon since vanilla Firefox is getting worse & AI garbage is being forced on me with it.

@megatronicthronbanks@mastodon.social @0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud It's upsetting how much Google has control of other organizations that they don't even own.

  • @0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud Note that it is completely false. The real announcement was for only one government agency, with around 100 employees. The rest is for a possible future.

@0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud maybe all that time spend tinkering with nixos can finally be useful and she could get a job related to it :gphn_think:

@0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud I predict this will end badly. #France, please stick to something simpler. NixOS is "geeks only", IMHO, and you aren't 100% a bunch of geeks.

@0x7700e6@mastodon.catgirl.cloud Err… France already used Linux for half of it's cops (cops are separated between "Police" and "Gendarmerie" and only the later did the switch to it's own Ubuntu derivative OS) and parts of the military. Not to mention the public education and cities in France that already ditched Windows (well… part of the education are signing contracts worth billions with M$ instead of using Libreoffice…) So… it's nothing new. France has been doing it for decades. But it won't do a full switch that easily and that fast without a strong leader that wants that… and for now that's not who Macron is.
