Can't believe this news escaped me... Google has an "official" account on the Fediverse. I say "official" because there's no green check. Their last update was two days ago. FYI, I've seen a few Google engineers on the Fediverse. I even got into a disagreement with one Google engineer about self-hosting -- he didn't like it one bit! https://9to5google.com/2022/11/21/google-social-account-mastodon/

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social why was he against it? I can see it as a barrier to entry - you need skills, time and money. If the instances turn into the fed equivalent of SMTP servers it would be a bad thing. but otherwise, the way you have set yourself up would be a good way for folks to learn and play about tech, fed and more

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social There is really no viable reason Google does not have their own instance. It's simply them discouraging use of decentralized social networks because they cannot profit from them easily. They shut off G+ which could have been great. Now their model is ad revenues from search engines, data revenues from user data, and app revenues from the play store. They would have to compete with the FOSS apps.
