Can't believe this news escaped me... Google has an "official" account on the Fediverse. I say "official" because there's no green check. Their last update was two days ago. FYI, I've seen a few Google engineers on the Fediverse. I even got into a disagreement with one Google engineer about self-hosting -- he didn't like it one bit! https://9to5google.com/2022/11/21/google-social-account-mastodon/

Cool fact about Mastodon: Not only can you block trolls, you can block entire servers and instances where trolls hang out. Anyone can do this—not just moderators!

Meta just laid off 10,000 people. This follows 11,000 job cuts back in November—now totalling 21,000 people within a year. Additionally, 5,000 jobs will now go unfilled. While I heavily dislike Meta and everything it stands for, it gives me no pleasure when people lose their livelihoods. While Twitter's difficulties gets more press, Meta's disarray is worth paying attention to—especially since they hope to eventually join the Fediverse. https://apnews.com/article/meta-fa...

1/ Someone asked, "How can basic HTML pages be social media -- and create something resembling the public square?" So here's a thread 🧵 If you were not around to witness the early web, let me explain what it was like. During the 90s, most websites just used HTML. CSS and JavaScript existed in the latter part of the decade, but they were entirely optional. The appeal of the web wasn't "rich media". Again, that came later. What made the web...

Educational institutions might have to start adopting the Fediverse. Especially now that Twitter's API is no longer free. Which means an entire generation of students will be learning about ActivityPub and Mastodon's API.

A few days ago, I asked a self-identified leftist why they're still on Twitter. Their response: "I shouldn't have to leave Twitter, Elon Musk should!" 🙄 That's not how it works. Elon Musk literally owns Twitter now. It's completely in his private hands. Twitter isn't even trading on the stock market anymore. Twitter's data centers hosting all your tweets? Elon Musk physically owns them now. Everything you put on Twitter n...

All right! I'm creating some community moderation feature requests on #Mastodon, and I'm going to drop links in this thread each time they're created. The feature requests are: 1. Turn off comments 2. Lock comments 3. Approve comments 4. Flair profiles 5. Adjust crowd control Will add updates!

@ethanOS@infosec.town There's benefits and drawbacks to both platforms. For example, I like that Mastodon allows you to embed posts onto a website. However, Calckey gives you a drive, a gallery, and webpages.

@ArtBear@mastodonapp.uk It’s better to air on the side of caution. And we’re already having conversations with @wild1145 about re-federating.

@ArtBear@mastodonapp.uk I spoke with @wild1145 yesterday. I also let him know @kainoa will be in touch. I’m keen for a resolution, but it’s important they have a dialogue before a decision is made.

Some people believe there's no purpose to "liking" something on Mastodon since it doesn't affect any algorithm. Not the case. It does something incredibly valuable: it acknowledges people. Which is incredibly powerful, and is all the more important *because* it's not connected to gaming any algorithm. By liking something on Mastodon, you are doing it honestly -- without any agenda at play other than that you like it. So go ahead. Click that like but...

For those out of the loop: Twitter's closing its offices as employees quit in droves. It actually might not exist next month. There's now yet another #TwitterMigration as people create new account on Mastodon. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/twitter-offices-closed-1.6655881
