@swachter@toot.boston I work in libraries and can confirm. We are a smallish group serving a Scottish region, but we have over 200,000 books, a great archive of local documents (including documents pertaining to our most famous former resident, Robert Burns) access to Ancestry, Access to Research (hundreds of thousands of Research papers free for library users), BFI replay ( the British Film Institute's streaming service), Borrowbox, Theory Test Pro and GoCitizen.co.uk as well. All for free.

@swachter@toot.boston alternatives: bypass paywalls clean browser addoncheck google page caches (as often these sites will whitelist goog's search scraper so that it can still access the site and thus will index their content)try setting your user agent to the googlebot's user agent (& try disabling js) but also, yes, libraries are very good. get a library card, if you can.

@swachter@toot.boston some German libraries include something called Pressedatenbankzugriff (press database access), which indexes news articles. If that's part of your membership, there is a Firefox add-on that will automatically try to find the paywalled articles in that database and place the text on the website. @swachter@toot.boston I was visiting Boston from the UK years ago, while a postgrad student, and asked in the central public library if I may use their wifi. They very kindly issued me a library card and explained what services it let me access. I was bowled over by such a welcoming approach to visitors.

@swachter@toot.boston Sadly this mostly applies to US. I may "borrow" digital versions of a limited selection of newspapers (very few international) with my library card here in Germany. Not on publication day and only, if they are not already used by someone else, of cause. 🙄

@swachter@toot.boston also Boston in particular like, dun currrr I got my library card totally online, no physical visit whatsoever, and now just renew it every few years via email. "Still here? Cool have all this content!" I mean I do in fact live in the city of Boston, I'm just letting the people know, they ain't check that shit. Be a Bostonian, it's all good, fam.
