Not just a smokescreen. It threatens to make alternatives like Linux and Mastodon illegal and thereby deny us any escape.
I wish I had cause for optimism here, but I am very, very, very scared.

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org @MissConstrue@mefi.social @quinn@social.circl.lu @apz@some.apz.fi I find optimism in the knowledge that the same types of people behind the world of piracy are also the people behind alternatives like Linux and Mastodon... and there are a lot more (as in orders of magnitude more) in the Linux and Mastodon camps. Government may drive the alternatives underground but as long as governments are run by old men who don't understand technology the nerds will remain 5 steps ahead of them
