@atpfm@mastodon.social Not long until @caseyliss@mastodon.social gets to wax lyrically about the 700 episodes milestone.

@atpfm@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social Oh, last one, about the AI stuff creating shortages and finding bugs. The other thing they are incredibly good at is performance optimization. You feed them the profile, and they suggest fixes. I do it on my own work in Rust, but I won't self-promote that. Here's how it went on someone else's project: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2026/02/06/Q-Plus-C-Ch1

@atpfm@mastodon.social @siracusa@mastodon.social Ep. 690 you mention reasons for software development being capex/opex. Mostly right that the lawyers in the building were deciding whether what you were doing qualified as one against the other, but they were themselves reacting to Section 174 changes. More if you aren't already asleep: https://news.bloombergtax.com/tax-insights-and-commentary/new-irs-r-e-rules-risk-stifling-software-innovation-for-startups

@atpfm@mastodon.social A $399 Mac Neo with an A19 Pro and 12GB of RAM (even looking like an AppleTV), would be a great. "Ultra" means "more expensive than Pro". That is all it will ever mean. I don't think the MB Pro will be replaced with the MB Ultra. The higher priced M6 MBU will come out, and then after (or simultaneously) the lower priced M6 MBP will come out. I also think it would be cool if Apple shipped a bigger 18" MacBook too. Something like this M6 MB Line Rumours & Wishcasts:

@atpfm@mastodon.social A lot of talk in this and prev ep about people wanting all the good but just don't want to pay for it. I'm sure there's plenty of them, but I think there are others who understands compromises but just can't afford $2000+ computer. So they're not ungrateful, or ignorant. My first own Mac was an LC475 and that was all I could afford, and I understood the compromises but it was this or no Mac at all. John said the LC was bad, but honestly this was quite good. It even had 256 COLORS! 🌈😍

@marcoarment@mastodon.social I don’t think you’ll get any real disagreement, very few cyclists WANT to be on an MUP either. It’s the lesser of two evils, generally, and we all (pedestrians and cyclists) are happy to get any piece of infrastructure, even if it’s shared. The same way drivers don’t fully appreciate that this lightweight, precariously balanced two wheel contraption (that REQUIRES swerving to remain upright), cyclists on an MUP have to tolerate that two footed critters have a tendency to unpredictably change direction without looking first to see if anything is hurtling towards them. I use a bell on my bike because the range is better than my voice (and nobody responds well to a deep male voice shouting “ON YOUR LEFT” at them), but frankly it’s typically safer to let the buzzing tires and freewheel indicate my presence. An unfortunately common reaction to a cyclist’s bell is for the pedestrian to look over their left shoulder and step directly into the cyclist’s path 🤦 @atpfm@mastodon.social

@atpfm@mastodon.social I feel like the glaringly obvious miss in the Apple naming scheme is the XY Studio? Given what they've done with Mac Studio & Studio Display being the top of the line, the OLED deployment on the Mac line would be MacBook Studio, iMac Studio, etc., because that seems like their top-of-the-line for-the-creatives branding right now (c.f. Creator Studio).

@atpfm@mastodon.social I tend to disagree with Marco about most things but am in 110% agreement about the obnoxious, entitled, hypocritical behavior of cyclists towards pedestrians. One especially obnoxious thing that happens in cities: cyclists never stop or even slow at crosswalks, and assume they have the right of way in any situation.

@atpfm@mastodon.social I agree with @marcoarment@mastodon.social on the problem with some cyclists (tbh usually e-bikes) & the separate space for everyone is the best way forward especially in a country that can have such wide streets. I can't remember the last time I drove, so walking & cycling is my only modes of transport. Both walkers & cyclists can be in the wrong space but when you're the one with the higher speed, you do need to be mindful of headphone users & reaction times. Slowing down for a couple seconds is fine.

@atpfm@mastodon.social As a cyclist I totally agree with Marco. It’s a result of our systems, our culture, our times. Americans who don’t live in dense cities aren’t used to dealing with multi modes of transport. Even as a cyclist, when I ride at a leisurely pace, I get the same behavior Marco experienced as a pedestrian and totally sympathize. Fuck those assholes. They suck.

@atpfm@mastodon.social I remember the 2012 macbook pro announcement so vividly, it was crazy. Retina in a laptop, thinner, faster, everything. It was very exciting. The rumored macbooks don't feel the same because, as you said, the tech has been there for quite a while and we are more winderinf, why now.

@atpfm@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social your take is absolutely right about pedestrians & bikes & cars John was probably hinting at the “orange pilled” philosophy — and having tried Amsterdam recently (while being aware of LA’s similarity to Amsterdam 1960s, except the weather is better and LESS windy), I can say it makes you want to have these Nice Things for yourself at home What very few mention is that per mile, cycleways (and pedestrian paths) are 99% less expensive than roads. That’s mostly down to the maintenance costs from the weight of vehicles. So … a year of roads funding could buy a century of cycle paths, all with 3-lane / segregated pedestrian paths too. Even the YouTuber “Road Guy Rob” has said that the only logical solution is to acknowledge three kinds of traffic at three speeds, and build out 3 networks of paving. For what it’s worth, I always think he and “Not Just Bikes” agree on 90% or 95% or even 100% and it’s just a difference in their hobby focus and interest. Road Guy Rob had a fascinating review of the “bicycle freeway” in South Carolina, which is incredible if only because it’s a guide to How To Have Nice Things, The American Way — it’s odd from a non-US perspective but hey if it works it works! https://youtu.be/NxGYs8kHxw4

@atpfm@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social if you want seperate bike/pedestrian/car lanes, just move to the Netherlands! Although when you’re cycling yourself you’ll still get yelled at by people on road bikes passing at 20mph because that’s just how they do.

@atpfm@mastodon.social I think Apple should rename iPhone 17e to 17 Neo. Neo is now a cool, affordable subbrand that doesn't imply "cheapness". It also fit their current naming scheme better. "17e" is from the past era when they used to have "S" phones.

@atpfm@mastodon.social Regarding the term "Ultra"used by Apple, it could be considered to go back decades! When the Apple Online Store was new (late 90s early 00s) customers were presented with usually 3 primary configurations of a Power Mac or PowerBook: sometimes explicitly shown as, sometimes only internally and/or on the invoice called Good, Better, Best. And you could then customize. Often there was a pre-configured total high end called Ultra which was even stocked (sorta secretly) in some stores.

@atpfm@mastodon.social Regarding “AirPods Ultra” possibly having cameras for visual intelligence for turn-by-turn navigation, I wonder if Apple would feel conflicted about that. Turn-by-turn is certainly useful for walking and biking directions. For driving, there are many jurisdictions (US states, etc) where it is illegal to have earbuds (maybe 2) in while driving. And there's many where it is not illegal!

@atpfm@mastodon.social I’m genuinely curious: what is it about Hacker News that puts @siracusa@mastodon.social and @caseyliss@mastodon.social off? I always find it like, the only place on the internet aside from _maybe_ mastodon where people are able to intelligently discuss tech topics without resorting to flame wars and tribalism (the exchange you read out in the episode is a good example). Is there something I’m not seeing? Some experience I haven’t had?
