@RoseRaven@eldritch.cafe You can try a factory reset or to reinstall steamos. Process is described here: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/1B71-EDF2-EB6D-2BB3

@RoseRaven@eldritch.cafe It took me about a week of trying again and again before the "update" finally "took". It's the worst thing about the steam deck. When it finally worked out, after much frustration, the device actually turned out to be really reliable and solid. But dear deities, that initial update was pure horror. And it happens to a lot of people as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t4x2q6/steamdeck_setup_stuck_at_1_second_remaining_for/

@RoseRaven@eldritch.cafe hey Rose, great choice going with the 'Deck for your kid. They're fantastic. This error seems to pop up all to regularly, and there's a reddit thread with various solutions, all of which seem to be around using a different network connection (switching from 5GHz to 2.4GHz, or using a phone hotspot), and/or ensuring the device has the correct date and time set (an incorrect date/time can cause secure signing of the update to fail): https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/uhlykf/update_error_an_error_was_encountered_during_the/

@RoseRaven@eldritch.cafe My deck worked out of the box, so I'm just guessing possibilities. Is the time and date set correctly? That could cause connection issues if it's wrong. Are you able to try a different broadband network? I'm wondering if there's something about your home broadband connection that's causing an issue for the update. Trying on someone else's Internet connection could rule out possibly. Or using tethering to your mobile if you have a very generous data allowance.

@RoseRaven@eldritch.cafe also, advice for the future: those 256GB models run out of disk space *really* fast as the OS keeps the shader cache on that internal storage. Invest in the biggest/fastest micro SD card you can afford as soon as you can, and move the games off the internal storage to the SD card.

@RoseRaven@eldritch.cafe I think there's an issue with the current update, it's been failing for me as well
