Did you know that financial institutions are free to sell information about you to others? Things like your name, address, income, credit score, payment history, and loan details? Would you believe me if I told you despite being opted-in automatically, opting out almost always requires that you fill out a paper form, find a stamp and mail it to them and hope they don't pretend it was "lost in the mail?" The only reason we can even opt-out is because of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) of 1999. Which the industry lost their $hit over, because "over regulation." It's not all good, though. GLBA killed key provisions of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, which prohibited banks and insurance companies from operating as combined entities.
