Most European languages are united by a common thread: the word for ant. From the Galician formiga to the Romanian furnică, and from Greek μυρμήγκι (myrmígki) to Finnish muurahainen. Surprising, huh? We can find the traces of a single Proto-Indo-European ancestor: *mórwis.

@mapologies@mastodon.social wait wut? Not saying this is bad, just details are off OK so I get that Swedish have dialects but adding Jämtländska to the mix and not the others is kinda weird. And "pissmyra" is a word for "fire ants" literally meaning "piss ants" or "ettermyra" in Swedish or specifically the species Myrmica Rubra "Pissmyra" is colloquial and something you said about those ants as a kid

@mapologies@mastodon.social pismire is such a great word, it comes from the strong smell of an ant-hill. this is also coincidentally where we get the word pissant!
