If I walk into a bar and order a drink I expect them to ask for ID to prove my age. If I walk into a McDonalds and buy a Big Mac I would not expect them to ask for ID to check my age and if they did I would not expect them to photocopy it and give it to Fred to keep in his poorly locked file cabinet.

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place Part of what entitles the bar to ID is that there is a very standard and "checks and balances" definition of alcoholic beverage published by the government and not, you know, whatever advertisers and visa and mastercard are currently feeling deserving of a threat to shut down the bar's complete access to the most basic payment services, based entirely on the vibes of whomever is currently writing the most complaint emails to them (usually a fundamentalist religious nutjob).

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place if mcds sold alcoholic drinks, they can id. Same as our supermarkets. isn't this exactly how online platforms will justify ids, if something is deemed "adults only" - not by a standard definition like what an alcoholic drink is but some random t&c of theirs, will not be accessible without proof of age? So you can still get your burger, just that if you want some drink they deem alcoholic - not by actual alcohol content - will require you to sign your life away?.

@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place Instead of copying your ID, can't Fred, knowing you are you, and old enough to buy and consume that Big Mac, issue you with a unique, but otherwise random code, not linked to you, but verified in person, which you could also use in Wendy's or Taco Bell? They will know you are a suitable patron, so you can have BBQ Bacon Melt, Big Mac or Volcano Burrito as you prefer, and no-one needs to compromise your Id. (I know some people can"t get to a restaurant but the principle stands)
