Why do we allow bribes for politicians? Whether from foreign governments, big business, or oligarchs, they are all splashing the cash through direct donations, funding for trips and other perks and lucrative, non-parliamentary roles. I just cannot see why this in any way benefits our democracy. Maybe I am naive. #Corruption #UKPolitics

@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot not naive. I also do not understand why political parties are allowed to privately fundraise at all instead of being given a government budget that covers outreach to promote their official platform. I also think all lobbying materials should be submitted without comment and publicly available for evaluation.

@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot It is nuts and the State of South Australia, where I live, recently put a cap on political donations. The government that did that was re-elected in a landslide, so no-one can claim it's political suicide. Fingers crossed that the Federal Government does the same. SA has always been a leader in electoral reform.
