How many of these #TechLayoffs would be prevented if the tech industry had strong unions who could fight against CEO mismanagement and shareholder greed? Makes you wonder 🤔 #InternationalWorkersDay #MayDay #TechWorkersOrganize

@shauna@social.coop almost zero. It's been such a small fraction that were financially justifiable.

@shauna@social.coop Probably none. How many layoffs do unions prevent in media? Auto manufacturing? Other areas? They don't tend to. Mismanagement is a big thing in many companies, and tech hired many more people than they should have. But that doesn't get fixed by unions from what I've seen over many decades.

@shauna@social.coop @miah@hachyderm.io as someone who has been laid off both by large corps and small ones. Honestly? None of them. The fundamental problem is what they want. Not an imperfect balance with what they want.

@shauna@social.coop and also, how many would be preventable if tech companies were focused on building sustainable businesses that didn't require ungodly sums of money to keep them afloat until they displaced/crushed all of the competition?

@shauna@social.coop How many layoffs period. I'm not a conspiracy person, but I see the layoffs, then I see stock buy backs, or requirements to go into the office, and I wonder, is it all just to make sure "the man" stays in control? #capitalism #layoffs #union

@shauna@social.coop probably most of them, it'd prevent these giants from hiring fast and furious without a plan, so far less need to cut when they get worried.

  • @shauna@social.coop Or had CEOS that weren't making $226 million a year to sit in their ivory office.
