Sadly, I think that was all an illusion. It just felt nice because we were still in phase 1 of enshittification. The tech world was already taken over by venture capital whose long term objective has always been the same.

@freediverx @grishka Yes, for all of the 2000s and part of the 2010s, we were still living under the VC-backed illusion of "IT'S ALL FREEEEE!!!!" Now they've put the screws to us, for sure.

@freediverx @rl_dane at least paid software always respected you and your work back then. Not the case today — Windows still technically costs money, but behaves as if it's free. Many other things are subscriptions (for no good reason) but still treat you with utter disrespect.
